hi all,
I have a PC with Pentium II 233 Mhz/ Intel 440LX motherboard.
Running windows 98, and after we have installed wifi in our house, and
upgraded this pc to
a Wifi PCI card, it became ubearably slow after about 30 minutes from
boot. (the mouse cursor hardly moves).
I know there is one sure upgrade option- put in a 333Mhz Pentium II but
I'm not sure its worth the hassle. (From what I remember, 40%
additional CPU speed does not always return a 40% system performance
increase).
I read Bill Selk's 440LX web site-
http://home.earthlink.net/~billselk/al440lx/slockets2.html
He mentions there that it is possible to run a 100Mhz FSB CPU into my
66Mhz motherboard, and it will work albeit at a lower speed:
"You can put a 100 MHz FSB CPU in your system, but it will only run at
66 MHz. So, if you buy a 800 MHz Celeron 2 processor, it will only run
at 533 MHz (the clock multiplier multiplied by the front side bus
speed, or 8 times 66 MHz). "
I have tried to find his recommended upgrade, the POWERLEAP PL-IP3/T
"slocket 2" upgrade, on E-bay, with a 66Mhz cpu but the only one I find
Is one with a 1.4GHz 100 Mhz CPu. I would like to know any opinions
whether this is worth a try and will simply work as he suggests (but at
what speed?), at a slower speed or not work at all,
and is the item below a Celeron 2 at all?
POWERLEAP PL-IP3/T CELERON 1.4GHZ 1.4 1400 CPU
Thank you!!
Also... Is this a Celeron 2 or 1?
Well, is not as simple as Celeron 1, 2, 3, etc. There are many CPU cores
sold under the name Celeron. The one in the link is actually a fourth
generation Celeron (1st the ones without L2 cache, 2nd Mendocino, 3rd
Coppermine and 4th Tualatin). For your system, i would recomend a
Mendocino. I runs up to 533 mhz with 66 mhz bus and 2.0 - 2.2 v vcore. With
a Slot 1 adapter, it will definitly fit in your LX board. The Tualatin
might require a newer BIOS, and it might not be avaiable for your board.
Second, running something at 933 mhz with a 66 mhz FSB sucks.
That, or just get a newer board. $109 plus shipping can buy a quite
powerfull 2nd hand computer.
