I just got through with this very thing....i put in the xp disk, went to the
install (not 'r' for recovery console) where the partitions are shown. Then
used repair option from there. XP notified me that it made changes (fixed) a
hard drive issue. When it rebooted i took out the disk and let it try from
the harddrive again. TADA!!!! fixed the MBR I guess. All worked prfectly
after that.

Awwwww shit. That probably means that the PSU died slowly, and took the
hard drive with it. I hope it didn't kill anything else in the
rocess. -Dave
wondering if I ghosted the existing disk while it's actually working if
that would be good to restore to the new one, or would it be safer to
run the transfer files and settings wizard, install xp on the new
machine then import the existing settings ?
