Linux is free.

Linux is a server operating system.

Still hasnt managed to get up a decent head of steam tho.

Who cares?

Network effects and the applications barrier to entry caused
by a positive feedback loop keep Windows pegged at the top of the
desktop operating system market.

The positive feedback loop began after Windows (without competition)
sold millions of copies preinstalled on personal computers.

1. Programmers wrote for Windows because consumers bought Windows
preinstalled on their PCs.

2. Consumers bought Windows PCs because programmers wrote for
Windows.

3. Goto 1.

There was no way around it. The only way to provide consumers with a
choice of applications is to separate the operating system maker
from the applications makers. Which monopoly operating system an
applications programmer writes for doesn't matter (their profit
comes from number of copies sold). Their problem is having to
compete against the operating system maker on an extremely slanted
playing field. And then there's the problem with applications
monopolies. Open standards is probably the only solution.
