when you put 'everything back together', did you apply some 'thermal
interface material', aka shmear, to the CPU (not too much though so it
wont' spill around the CPU)?
Does the beep sound like dadidadidadi, siren like?
Then just go to the store and get a little TMI tube (they'll ask an arm
and a leg for it, like 5 bucks or so for the .1 penny product).
No you cannot use anything else, that TMI stuff is somewhat special, not
just some cream. Sunscreen won't work.
I get this usually with the AMDs, their surface is just large enough so
that the CPU grease won't let go. Never had a damaged MB from that.

I suspect you would not harm anything by testing the new chip, but I am
only speculating on the basis of having gotten away with a lot of
ill-advised experiments. The best idea would be to take the old CPU to a
tech store and pay them to test it in another 939 board. If it works,
that would suggest the board is the problem. Maybe some of the electrical
contacts in the socket were damaged.
