Missing files

Mainly Im curious about this
I was working on some pages for my Website.
I finished and I copied and pasted one file to another directory. Then
I renamed the file and moved in back to the orginial directory so I
could have the same file, with two names.
I then openned up my FTP program to upload the files to my Web server.
As I was doing that I noticed that the those 2 files were not there. I
thought maybe I just copied them to the wrong director. But nothing
in other directors. Then I search for them, looked in the recycle
bin, used Ontrack Recovergy to find any missing files.
Never could find them or any trace of them.
Im wondering what happen to them?
