Random read errors on ATAPI DVD-RW drive

On the system I am currently building I have installed a Plextor PX-740A ATAPI DVD-RW drive, from which I am now installing software. I successfully installed an OEM version of Windows XP Home SP2. Fine. But now, as I install device drivers and software, I'm getting these random read errors as the CD-ROMs are accessed, all of them along the lines of "Setup Failed -- Could not find the file specified", or sometimes, "Could not read setup file -- Access denied". I get these random errors with several setup disks (including Plextor's own), and I've tried swapping cables. Could the problem be the DVD drive itself or -- *Gulp!* -- the mobo?!
