My wife's machine. clone, P4, 1.6GHZ, D 845 Intel MB. Intel Pro/100VM
integrated LAN. It is hooked up to a Lynxes WRT54G wireless Router and the
54G is connected to my whole house Linksys BRSF41. The wireless parts
always works great but when you boot up her tower there is no network
connection. You reboot again and it works fine!
All the settings are correct compared to all the other wired machines on
the network. Any suggestions??
Thanks,
J.
This may sound crazy, but try swapping the power supply with another
computer with a similar watt rating power supply. I suspect there is a
power problem on cold start. If the LAN doesn't initialize quickly on boot,
it probably never will. But rebooting is a warm boot where the power supply
(or some other circuit) might have had a chance to ramp up voltage to a
level to support the LAN. This could be caused by a power supply failing,
or bad caps on the mainboard.
Another thing to try (maybe you should try this first, because it will be
easier) is to clear the CMOS settings and then load default settings. It's
possible that some funky wake on lan setting (or something) could be causing
a momentary interruption of LAN connection on cold boot. -Dave
