Ultra 320 SCSI drives - the size of laptop drives

A mate of mine found a couple of Ultra 320 36 GB SCSI disks with SCA connectors (80-pin). But unusually these are about the size of laptop drives (I have not seen them myself) rather than the more common 1" thick ones. I gather they are not much wider than the SCA connector.
Does anyone know what they might be used for? I believe they are IBM.
