Ok, here's a scenario I'm trying to help fix:
I sold a cdrom to a friend. To try this rom (he had two installed
already), he put the third rom in on primary cable/ide with boot hdd on
865pe chipset. I specifically said "You don't want to do that". He did it
anyway. Upon taking the rom out , which was in the lead, "media test
failure" at boot. Clearing cmos doesn't work. Setting boot order didn't
work. System detects drive OK .Cdrom for xp to repair, found system
partition on D:\ which was on C:\ with third rom installed. How did this
flim flamming of drive letters happen, and how to recover? System will not
take drive completely into boot even after starting whole thing over clean
(repartition, format). Is ide dead? I did this on a 440bx chipset a few
years ago, the repair shop said it was fixable and sure enough it was.
Try this: Remove the third CD rom and tell the BIOS to force an update of
ECSD (this rescans all Plug and Play devices).
