I'm getting this strange, apparently random short beep from the system
speaker every so often (about once a day). It kind of sounds like a
posting beep of some sort, except it's not during post, just during
normal operation.

KM4M-V mobo with Sempron 2600+ chip, running Win2k. Temps all seem to
be acceptable. Nice and clean, not dusty etc.

Oddly enough my laptop has also started a similar beep over the last two weeks... Strange.

Which virus scanner are you using?

AVG free.... it's up to date, and I ran a full system scan last night, nothing was found. I'm also using PestPatrol for spyware.

My laptop beeps if I don't log on right away after powering it up because of a recent update to AVG Free. It tries to auto-update before the user logs on a little bit after power up. When it completes the update, it does a motherboard type beep. It does not do this if you're logged in and it tries to update. this could be your culprit.

Cheers,

Ari

Don't think it's that, I have a cable modem that's running all the time (usually). And when I start up and it wants to do updates it hasn't had any problems.

Same here, via wireless, and it updates before the logon with the latest AVG Free build.

It tends to beep (it's more of a "blonk" than a beep) when I'm doing more mundane tasks like browsing the web and checking email/reading newsgroups, writing papers, etc.. so the system has been on a little while.

Ahh okay.

I'm wondering if it could be a heat issue but I haven't had much luck in finding a program that will report the temps (it's a presario 2100series) I've tried Everest, and I've looked in the BIOS (which seems to be really idiot proof with all the options they give... I think about all I can change is the date and time :P).

Have you rebooted after a beep/blonk and looked at the temps reported in the BIOS (sorry, I haven't read this entire thread).

Everest did look at the HD though and it said that it's checked out ok temp wise. I might just be due for a reinstall of windows (yay!) Do you know of any other software I can try to see how hot the machine is running?

Motherboard Monitor (MBM)

Pepper

Sadly the BIOS seems to have been idiot proofed and it doesn't report any temperatures. The fan really kicks on when I'm in the BIOS though and a lot ofhot air gets pushed out (avoiding political joke). MBM doesn't seem to support the motherboard in my laptop unfortunatly.

Sometimes to get to advanced features of the BIOS there's a hotkey that needs to be pressed, like F10 or F1 once you're already in the BIOS screen. I know that gigabyte do (or did) this as standard practice.

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:
