It's hard to say based on those numbers alone. 500:1 contrast ratio
could mean that the blacks aren't that black or it could mean that
the whites aren't that white. Then again, it could mean nothing at
all because if the whitest white actually is 500x whiter than the
blackest black, you wouldn't have a problem.
Remember one thing about high brightness; it doesn't ensure a white
white or good color. All it ensures is that you will think you are
looking at the surface of the sun. Lowering the brightness manually
actually screws up the monitor's ability to reproduce color correctly
because contrast is tied to the LCD's brightness. Think 250cd/m2 as a
maximum. Trust me, putting a 300cd/m2 LCD in a dark room is a recipe
for eye strain. Try to find something with a contrast ratio of
700:1+ with a brightness rating of around 250cd/m2. Oh yeah, stay
away from those 4 or 2 ms response time monitors. They have
something called overdrive and their response times actually go way
over 30ms. Go to www.tomshardware.com and check out what they have
to say about various monitors. Remember, response times, contrast
ratios and brightness levels are all very liberally rated by the
manufacturer of the product.
