Re: I need a free antivirus program for Windows 98 system!

I'm using Windows Me and it looks like I'm in the same boat as you. I've
done some research and this is what I have learned so far:

AVG 7.5 is no longer supported and you can no longer get virus updates
for it.

Antivir is no longer offered nor supported for Windows 98/Me.

Avast will no longer be offered nor supported for Windows 98/Me after
December 2009. You may be able to use it as a temporary solution in the
interim but I would be hesitant to do so since Avast is very heavy on
resources and your system will crawl after it is installed.

So far the only promising lead I've come across is this:

Moon Secure Antivirus. It's free, has a real time scanner, and claims
to be compatable with Windows 98/Me. I haven't given it a try yet but I
need to soon to protect my old pentium II & III Windows Me systems. I'll
let you know what I find out.

I looked into this antivirus further and it looks like, contrary to the
web page, it is only offered for windows 2000/XP/Vista so it probably
wouldn't have worked anyhow.

I did discover that NOD32 still offers and supports a windows 95/98/ME
version of their antivirus software (version 2.7). I sent an email to
them asking how to purchase (sorry it's not free!) it and how much it
costs. NOD32 received very good marks in past antivirus tests conducted
by VB.

I also discovered you can download a 30 day free trail version here:

You may want to give that a try. This is about the only lead I have
been able to find thus far.

Trevor,

Sadly Avast's support for Windows 98/Me will end in December 2009.
Hence installing the free version of Avast will only provide a temporary
solution. Also of the three most popular free antivirus programs (AVG,
Avast, & Avira Antivir) Avast is the most heavy on system resources. I'm
hesitant in installing it on an older pentium II or III system for fear
it will make the system crawl. The most promising prospect I have found
is NOD32 version 2.7. It is still supported for Windows 98/Me and has a
very small "foot print". It has received good reviews from Windows 98/Me
users and has received high marks in tests by Virus Bulletin.
Unfortunately though it is not free and is one of the more expensive
virus programs out there. At this point I think there are only 2 options
available. Either purchase an antivirus program which still supports
Window 98/Me or purchase an upgrade to Windows XP and install a free
antivirus program. :|

There is about 40 pages of NOD32 on www.warez-bb.org If you aren't
familiar with the site, you can get just about any program, game, movie
etc..etc.. for FREE they are all cracks NOT torrents all you need is
winrar or winzip for unpacking. I just got a version of NOD32 for my
WIN98 PC from there, it's the payed for version not the trial. Don't
torrent files, you risk a bunch of viruses, in the warez community it's
hard to come across a virus because of all the moderators and people
wanting to build a reputation for good cracked programs. You have to be
a a member to access the database, it's all free, just make an account
like this website and go search in the appz section, movie section,
games section or whatever section you want. In the 3 years using warez I
have NEVER came across a virus, program, app, game, OR movie I couldn't
find. The data base is *(MASSIVE)* my AVG expired to just like the
poster above, that's how I came across this forum. So just wanted to
share that with you guys, never pay for a program again. I have the
newest version of Photoshop, just about ALL adobe editing programs.. a
bunch of movies in Bluray and HD. Have a bunch of games like COD4 and
BF2. And now NOD32. Here's the website 'www.warez-bb.org'
