They are, though Malwarebytes Antimalware also has a paid version.
But MalwareBytes found a few items and then wanted money to clean
them. Same thing with Spybot S&D.
You need to say where you got them. For example, if you google for the
two words: malware bytes the first site presented is a known rogue
site, malwaree.org which presents a program that does exactly what you
describe .. then goes on to infest your computer with other/more crap.
Since you spelled it with the two words, I'd guess you shot yourself in
the foot.

You should make sure you are running the correct one. Also, get and run
SUPERAntiSpyware fromhttp://superantispyware.com/
I ended up d/l Ad-Aware and that worked fine.
I've read where Ad-Aware has reached the end of its useful life.
