Has anyone dealt with backing up your data online? Do you use a
external HD andbackupsoftware?
I was thinking about the online company, Carbonite, but I read so many
bad things while checking it out through Google. I am not sure about
any other online places. I was thinking about a large external HD, but
what happens if that would get stolen and your computer crashes?
Anyone have an experience with this?
Thanks,
Mark
Hello Mark,
online backup services could loose your data as well. Don't you read
news when even respectful banks have managed to loose the private
account data of thousands clients? The best way to be insured against
data loss or system crash is external HDD and duplication of your
backup to CD\DVD media + USB drive.
Just as an example, take Drive Backup 9.0 Personal Edition: www.drive-backup.com
I use this software myself for 4 years already (sure its previous
versions too) and I am thanking God each time my system gets screwed
up by malware or HDD failure. 15 minutes this software requires to
restore from backup image normally stored on external HDD saves me
lots of nerves and time. Worth of going and having a cup of coffee and
letting Drive Backup recover my system to the fresh state it was at
the moment of backup. Now imagine that your PC HDD dies and you need
quick recover, sure no OS is installed, you request bare metal restore
- but to recover from online backup service you need at least Internet
connection. And omg, local Internet provider got bankrupt recently etc
etc etc. You will loose here my friend. Kick off all those thoughts
and stick with local backup software.
So my answer to online backup service is - NO.

Noxcho
