Snip, snip...

I have talked to a lot of people about data preservation, and I can
promise you that there will never be an entirely reliable backup. If
your data is very important to you, "belt and suspenders" is the way
to go. Use a backup drive, and make two backups--using two different
backup programs--and then backup online too. No single system is
infallible, and as soon as you rely on only one option, something is
bound to go wrong.

Anyone have an experience with this?

I've evaluated most (if not all) of the online backup options
available for home users. Now I just backup to an external drive and
hope for the best.

Hello Rhonda:

The fact that you've turned to a local backup solution probably says
it best.

Well, I only did so because it was more convenient for me. Considering
how many times my backup disk has gotten lost in the house, I'm not sure
it's the safest solution.

I suppose if you backed up the backup by burning an
occasional DVD, from your backup drive, you might increase your
confidence level.

All that might remain, is what backup software do you use?

I use Acronis, with some trepidation considering the problems some
people have had restoring with certain versions. Anything I consider
irreplaceable is also copied manually to the backup drive, as well as to
free online services (one for documents, another for pictures). All my
email is also permanently stored on my various providers' servers. I
don't download videos and music, so neither is a consideration.

I have stuff everywhere. Privacy is not my concern. If I need to keep a
secret, I don't put it on the computer.
