| Hi David Lipman;
| I got yours over at the Google group for Freeware. You referred
| me here, so here I am.
| I am using a Dell Dimension 3000, Microsoft Windows 95xp Home loaded
|> at the moment with Office SP3 , I have the Google Service Pack
|> with Norton Virus Scan. I am at present using the XP 95 MS firewall.
Windows 95 XP ?
No such OS. Windows 95 is one OS and Windows XP is another and WinXP came out around 2002.

| A lot of posts condemn Symantec-Norton as bloatware. I got it
| because it was famous back a few years ago and I thought, "Gee, a good
| application from a good company, and a freebie."
| Our correspondents seem to disagree, because Symantec uses too much
| energy-space and has this d!@#$%mned habit of not uninstalling except
| with a painful extraction. Yes, i know of the uninstall application
| for Symantec, but what a botheration (I could use shorter Anglo Saxon
| words!).
| Then Microsoft, and its firewall. MS is only two words, a
| contraction for MASSIVE SATAN to my mind, with respect. I am irked by
| it every day in every way.
| Well, that was good therapy, now to the Question:
| (1) Is anyone pirating Symantec and making a Symantec-Lite or a
| Symantec Alternative like they did to Quick Player and Real Player?
| Who is that, please. If no one wants to do that, which Virus Scan can
| cover the territory covered by the Google pack Symantec Norton Virus
| Scan--with less space and energy and an uninstall provided easily? I
| need an access and an on demand scan for viruses et al. Please speak
| freely on this, i want education.
If you mean that people have repackaged a Norton product for redistribution, then yes it has
been
Norton has become bloadware and dogs down a system to a crawl making simple acts on their PC
slow.
| (2) I got the Microsoft Firewall all installed with the XP 95
| etc. It is engineered by MS, but is there one that is User Friendly?
| I Do Not want to get all sorts of troubles if I shut off the MS and go
| for, say, Zone Alarm, or one of its colleagues. So: Summary: I want a
| User Friendly Firewall that covers the same territory as the MS, and
| does it better as freeware or OSS. Again, I want education,
| correspondents are encouraged: please barge in, welcome stranger!!
| Thanks David Lipman, i am using your suggestions on spyware
| scanning and will get back with you soon about it. Thanks again.

The WinXP built-in FireWall is better then nothing but a FireWall appliance, even a NAT
Router, is far better. Hardware FireWall apliance are easy to implement and manage and thus
"user friendly". Such software as WallWatcher can allow you to monitor FireWall/NAT Router
activity.

The two modes of operation of anti malware software are "On Access" and "On Demand".
On Demand - When the user causes a scan to be perform either manually or via a schedule.
On Access - When the anti virus application scans files written and/or read to media for
viral signatures or through heuristics looking for malicious or exploit code.
Only one fully installed AV application should be installed to perofrm "On Access" scanning.
Having two or more will cause conflicts and may interfere with each other capability and may
detract from the capaibity to dtect malware and will degrade performance unneccesarily.
As I also noted, you should never perform concurrent On Demand scans, only consecutive On
Demand scans. If you perform concurrent On Demand scans the software may conflict with each
other and will significantly degrade the overall performance of the system and thus all
scanninmg functions.
