Emsi Software has an antimalware program called A-squared in a free &
pay version. I haven't seen it mentioned here nor have I seen it
mentioned in any AV reviews or tests. Anybody know anything about it?

Yep, now an old report but back then it wasn't. a-squared was so low in coverage that there wasn't much point in bothering to waste the disk space for it. You can install it and add it in your arsenal as yet another on-demand scanner. Be careful what you let it delete since some users have reported false positives by a-squared and ended up removing needed registry entries. Note that it is yet another supposedly anti-malware program that classifies "bad" cookies as malware (yeah, right, roll eyes).

ewido got bought by Grisoft (who renamed it to AVG AntiSpyware) but it is still free if all you want is another on-demand scanner in your arsenal. The trial version cripples itself in a month to the free version. I didn't bother with using its on-access scanning so I disabled it when I first got it because I plan on only using it as an on-demand scanner.

If you want on-access (realtime) scanning oriented more to trojans and worms and want it free, there is BOClean (now owned by Comodo). BOClean doesn't scan files. It checks what gets loaded into memory (i.e., it is a realtime memory scanner). Comodo will be integrating BOClean in their next version of their antivirus program which already has HIPS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intrusion-prevention_system); however, Comodo has left version 2.x in constant beta status so no one, like av-comparatives.org and VirusBulletin, tests it for coverage to see how it fares against other AV products. If Comodo ever takes it out of beta status (and it proves to have good coverage), with its HIPS, and after they integrate BOClean then that's what I'll use provided it remains free.
