I have recently had a bad spat of Malware clogging up my system so I
reformatted and re-installed everything again. Now I have also
installed spybot and use the registry monitor tool that monitors my if
a registry is being edited. I think I have everything in order except
when I open Windows explorer where I get a message from spybot saying
"A program is trying to edit {efa24e64-b078-11d0-89e4-00c04fc9e267}
reg would you like to allow". At the moment I decline because I'm not
sure whether this a good thing or not. Can anyone tell me whether I
should allow theis change or not and why it is being done.
I am running XP SP2 and AVG.
Thanks
I've no idea what that classid is, and a Google search and
search.microsoft.com returned no results. What I would suggest though is
doing a (free) registry scan with PcTools Registry Mechanic, then doing a
spyware scan with PCTools Spyware Doctor. You might be surprised what they
pick up. You won't be able to use then to change anything though unless you
buy them.

Spyware Doctor isn't free, but has a far better hit rate than Spybot S&D (or
AdAware) as well as having a lot of extra useful features. It has tools for
preventing infections in the first place, which is a lot better than getting
infected then trying to get rid of the things! It was top rated in a PcPro
labs a few months ago. Registry Mechanic is also excellent. (No I don't work
for them.)
I'd also recomment installing MacAfee SiteAdvisor, which is free, and will
install a toolbar in IE which turns red if you go to a site it has found
issues with (like bad downloads). It will also flag all Google search
results.
