I'm trying to help a friend whose computer has become unstable -
freezing intermittently.
He has run Spybot S & D and been told he has "newdotnet" which I can see
on searching can cause this problem.
Spybot says it could not remove newdotnet and asks for the OK to allow
Spybot to run on computer restart to remove it . When he restarts,
Spybot runs but says newdotnet is still there and again asks for Spybot
to run again on restart. This happens continually - he is stuck in a loop.
It's quite often worth trying the Add/Remove Programs entry in the Control
Panel to see if you can uninstall any unwanted program there. I know that
New.net does (at least, sometimes) put itself there. I seem to remember
testing it's Add/Remove Programs entry and it did indeed work.
Have you tried Spybot/Adaware scanning while the PC is in Safe Mode? If
using Windows XP it might be worth looking into using System Restore,
depending on how long ago the New.net infection came on board.
The freezing problem could also be caused by a hardware fault. Give
Memtest+[1] a few runs, re-seat the RAM/PCI cards (if you're happy delving
into a case) and all of the power/data cables into drives, motherboard etc.
If all else fails I'd say reinstall Windows and make sure some anti-spyware
precautions are taken :-)
P.S. I apologise if I am breaching protocol by posting here, having
previously posted this message to alt.privacy.spyware a couple of days
back. I am hoping for some more assistance as my friend still has the
problem happening. With hindsight I should have posted to both groups at
the same time.
Hey if no-one broke any protocol (which you didn't) the pedants would be
out of a job and the rest of us wouldn't look as reasonable as we are :-)

Thanks for your comprehensive reply (and replies from others). It looks like I'll be visiting my friend a.s.a.p. I think this help is beyond his ability to implement plus he is a lot less patient than me - can see him throwing the lot out the window if I try and talk him through it ;-)
Appreciate your help. BTW he does run XP Pro., the program didn't show up in add/remove programs, I didn't think of safe mode, he'll be able to do that without help. I'm happy delving inside so hopefully the solution will be amongst the suggestions.
Thanks again
Echy
