cleaning up corrupted install/uninstall...

Hi

I'm sure a few people have come across this type of scenario...

My uncle had NIS2003 on his Win98 system and his latest subscription had
recently expired. He saw McAfee Internet Security 2006 on special offer so
he bought that and proceeded to install it.

Of course it informed him that NIS needed to be removed first.

As my uncle isnt very PC literate he thought this meant simply deleting the
Norton/Symantec folders. (Oops!!) and then proceeded to install McAfee which
started OK but then didnt afinish.

I was then called over to survey the mess.

On boot up there were the inevitable prompts of missing Norton files and
eventually it gets to the desktop.

The unsual add/remove progs didnt work for Norton as numerous fiules were
now missing so I downloaded and ran the two suggested removal utilities from
Symantec to clean up the system.

These utilities reported they had completed succesfully.

So I then tried to install McAfee but it keep complaining that Norton rescue
Disk was still on the system and needed to be removed!

It was not possible to complete an install of McAfee. Nor was it possible to
remove the partial install of McAfee as there was no entry for it in
add/remove progs.

Oh dear.

Cant see how to get rid of Norton Rescue Disk if indeed it really is still
there

Cant go foward - cant go back!

Any ideas?

Thanks

Ian
