Re: Virus that corrupts process names

From: <buenfil@xxxxxxxxx>

| I use Windows XP Professional and IE. After visiting a web site, a pop
| up window appearead asking to install some .exe. I did not click
| anything, but after a few seconds the pop up disappeared and apparently
| the program got installed. From then on the internet connection was
| busy at all times. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del showed that many process names
| had been blanked or had strange characters, (squares, etc.)
|
| I attempted to run Adware and SpyBot antivirus, but both were blocked
| from executing. I got them to run after reinstalling and also changing
| the executable names. Of course I was so busy trying to get rid of the
| thing that did not pay attention to the virus names they gave, besides
| there were a lot of entries.
|
| After running Adaware and Spybot (and some other, I forget the name)
| several times I think the virus went away, but the corrupt process
| names still appeared. I tried to install Zone Alarm but it would not
| install. Finally I deleted the whole partition and reinstalled Windows.
|
| I was quite shaken by this episode. I did not know one could get a
| virus simply by visiting a web site. My confidence in Windows is
| severly dimished.
|
| Can you help me identifying this virus?
|
| Thanks,
|
| Manuel

If Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S&D got something, it most likely not a virus but adware/spyware
which those two applications target.

Please be specific and define "...but the corrupt process names still appeared." What are
they ? Give examples.

In the mean time I suggest the following ...

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm
