For over the past 100 or so years coffee has gained a bad reputation for being
an unhealthy addition to the human diet. However, coffee stands, chains,
stores, and cafes have popped up all over the world that are flooded by
customers everyday. But for all the hype, people continue to drink coffee day
in and day out regardless of the stigma. Maybe that's because coffee in and of
itself isn't bad for you at all.

[The Story of Gabriel De Clieu: A Coffee Visionary][8] [[Food-and-Drink:Coffee
Articles from EzineArticles.com][2]]

From the mid-17th century, coffee was increasingly popular in the Western
World. Various European powers had tried to grow coffee without any success
due to the specific growing conditions required for the plants to thrive.
However the Dutch had led the way in mass production by introducing the crop
to their colony in Java (Indonesia) where warm and humid conditions coupled
with the high altitude were an ideal growing environment.

[Why a One Cup Coffee Maker Is a Great Purchase!][9] [[Food-and-Drink:Coffee
Articles from EzineArticles.com][2]]

Owning a one cup coffee maker can be a real advantage at breakfast time.
Whilst instant coffee could never be accused of tasting anywhere near as good
as the freshly brewed, gourmet variety, one of the advantages it does have is
speed. You fancy a coffee and it's ready. Conventional coffee machines require
planning and a delay before you can get to drink your cup of java! But now
with the arrival of one cup coffee machines all this has changed and you can
drink the real thing in record time.

[If Your Cuisinart Coffee Pot Breaks, Rest Assured, Cuisinart Has A
Replacement Carafe][10] [[Food-and-Drink:Coffee Articles from
EzineArticles.com][2]]

Alright, so assuming you're an avid coffee drinker, you know that the carafe
is just as important - if not more - than the coffee itself! The good folks
over a Cuisinart seem to think so as well. Drinking coffee is something that
most of us do every day and everyone already knows that if you are repeatedly
using something day in and day out, it's bound to either wear out or break.
Yes my friend I'm telling you that chances are one day your precious carafe
may break. But when that day comes, no need to worry! Cuisinart has
replacement carafes that will get you right back on track to your coffee
sipping mornings (breathe).

Alejandro Mendez, is coming to Australia! Hosted by the Australian Barista
Academy (ABA) and Five Senses Coffee this will be the second in a running
series of ABA Masterclass events. Alejandro and his coach and boss, Federico
Bolanos, will be visiting the East coast of Australia from 14-18 November
2011. This is a unique opportunity for cafe owners, baristas and coffee
enthusiasts to get up close and personal with the 2011 World Barista Champion,
to hear him talk coffee, see his award winning performance and learn from his
expertise.

During his workshops and presentations, Alejandro will offer insight into his
journey to the World Championships, share his considerable knowledge of coffee
and offer tips based on his skills as a world class barista. Coming from El
Salvador, he has a unique perspective as his country transitions from being
primarily a coffee producer to one with a rapidly developing coffee culture.
Alejandro and his boss Federico run a chain of cafes called Viva in the
capital city of San Salvador and are looking forward to their first taste of
Australian coffee culture too.

This is the first time the ABA and Five Senses have hosted a World Barista

unique opportunity to learn from their expertise in speciality coffee. For
more information, or to book a place at one of the workshops, please contact:

[Do Good, Feel Good][23] [[Five Senses Coffee][12]]

![][24]

Well, this was supposed to be a story about a little coffee nursery in the
Highlands of Bali, but a few different events have conspired to convince me to
take a slight left turn. Bear with me; it's still a coffee story at heart,
just one with a slightly philosophical detour!

The first event happened whilst I was at the Perth Royal show with my 11 year
old daughter. A mother was struggling to pull a huge pram backwards up a set
of stairs. Instinctively I grabbed the front of the pram and together we
easily negotiated the stairs. After a particularly heartfelt thanks on her
part, we both went on our way. I felt good, she felt good - but the biggest
surprise was the reaction of my daughter. She immediately commented on it, and
may have even been a little proud of her slightly weird father. Any parent
with an 11 year old (11 is the new 14, if you didn't already know that!) knows
how fleeting these moments are. And that made me feel even better.

So what's this got to do with coffee, I hear you ask? Well, I remember that
exact same feeling when our group headed back to the vehicles for the trip
back to Ubud after completing phase 1 of our nursery project at Tri Karya
during our June harvest trip. We had worked incredibly well as a team to help
others to help themselves. The vibe was ebullient, and not in a peaky, sugar
high kind of way. We were grounded and high at the same time, and dangerously
close to a group hug. (Yes, I would have gone there!)

The moral of this slightly disjointed story is that doing good feels good, and
others in the immediate vicinity catch a little of the buzz as well. Organise
a fundraiser at your workplace or cafe and get everyone involved. Commit to it
wholeheartedly and give others an opportunity to do good and feel good about
themselves as well. I guarantee that people will think a little differently
(in a positive way) about your business or workplace afterwards.

Do good, feel good … Pass it on!

P.S. Oh, and the coffee nursery in Bali is doing great as well. The seedlings
are ready to go into the poly bags for planting in February!

[New Era for Indian Coffees][31] [[Five Senses Coffee][12]]

![][32]

Five years ago, I ummed and ahhed over Monsoon or Tiger Mountain branded
coffees. They were savoury, dusty, baggy and cigar-like - and I wasn't quite
sure whether I liked them or not. All I knew was that they blended poorly, had
a very bubbly crema and required a very different grind setting to most of the
other coffees I was using. Fast track forward five years and I'm no longer a
fan of these coffees. Sounds harsh, but those coffees were just that: harsh!
Now that the global quality standard has rapidly increased, the old-style
Indian coffees just don't stand a chance against the super sweet and refined
coffees of today. That's pretty much all I knew about Indian coffees, until my
recent visit to India, that is.

This is the simple story told to me along the way by different farmers as I
travelled through the coffee growing regions of South India. I'm sure there
are different interpretations, but this is theirs … which explained many
things for me.

As we travel through the Chikmagalur region of Karnataka, my ears perk up when
I am told of the Brother Baba Budan hills. We all know Mark Dundan's hole-in-
the-wall cafe on Little Bourke St. in Melbourne is named after this fellow,
and so I asked my Indian friends to tell me his story. They told me he was a
17th century Sufi ...
