Quoth "Jack Denver" <nunuvyer@xxxxxxxxxxxx>:
| I suppose it depends what you mean by real thing. Coffee doesn't grow in
| Turkey (and tea does, so after the loss of Arabia from its empire, Turkey
| switched largely to drinking tea). So any "Turkish coffee" either preground
| or beans uses beans imported from elsewhere (generally S.America - Brasil or
| Colombia in the modern era). Since we can get S. American coffees too and
| roast them to any desired degree and grind them as fine as you like, our
| "Turkish coffee" is just as real as anyone elses. But people are often
| nostalgic for the brands of their home country and "accept no substitutes"
| (more below).
|
| Usually the coffee that comes in glass jars is instant - did the rug man
| show you his jar of Nescafe?
Whatever he was talking about, it was whole bean. Taking for granted
that he knows about our coffee and knows the difference, there are a
number of factors that could account for that difference - origins
(100% Ethiopian or Yemeni is rare enough here that he could be excused
for not knowing where to get it), roast profile, adulterants, handling.
