Not sure I agree with that generalization Jim. Some of us take a lot of
pride in being able to take a $100 used Gaggia and by putting ~$80 worth of
parts in it, we can have espresso machines that make coffee one would have
difficulty differentiating from coffee made using a $2000 - 3000 machine.

That's the opposite of overkill. And it's not overkill to spend your money
on something that'll outlast less robustly built products, is it? I'm funny
that way; once I get something installed & tuned I want to enjoy it for a
long time.
