My doserless Rocky's grind adjustment ring suddenly went from working
normally today to increasingly tight the finer I wanted to set the
grind. Let me be clear: There were NO beans in the hopper as I was
adjusting from drip, at ~30, to espresso, at ~11. Further, in case a
few stragglers do find their way to the burrs, I only adjust it in the
finer direction when the motor is spinning. I do this a couple of
times a week as I grind beans to take to work, for the last 5 years.
Never a problem before.
I ran a brush up the chute, and down from the hopper, and also ran
some Grindz through it. Still too tight. Any ideas?
I've had a couple of occurrences when my doserless, stepless locks
up. Understandable when close to its limits at burr-to-burr, although
beans present at that, or something below a certain tolerance for
closeness may factor in. When it happens both upper and lower plates
snap themselves together, screwed by their threads from the high-
torque motor, quickly tighter than a drum. If it locks, I have to
disassemble the upper plates and PVC housing. Close attention to
care, right tools, and some torque involved. Not an issue, for the
most part, because I'd normally work perhaps a quarter of the
adjustment wheel's 5" diameter, farther out, for a useful grind.
Setup and dialing-in issue thingy. Wouldn't have known exactly what
and where would have been causing the problem unless I'd disassembled
in the first place, though, visually inspected and worked the
individual parts for insuring they're in smooth working order.
Surprising, sometimes, what a breakdown can reveal if you've a little
of a machinist in you.
