If your machine has a rotary pump than we would need to know if you
are using a reservoir or if you are directly plumbed.

It's a vibe pump, with a reservoir.

In the end the problem turned out quite simply: At the discharge of the
pump is a short section of Teflon line which couples to a metal tube
that goes to the HX. At the Teflon-to-metal coupling there is a small
compression fitting. A deposit of minerals had accumulated in the ferrule..

It wasn't enough to plug the fitting completely, and how it could let
one cup through and stop the second I cannot imagine. However, when I
cleaned out the deposit, flow returned and remained normal.

Does plastic expand much from the heat?

I noticed a similar issue with a Starbuck Barista machines. A freind
and I both brought our espresso machines to a party. I had gotten a
non-pressurised portafilter. My friend was using the stock
pressurised portafilter. After 3-4 shoths in a row the presssurised
filter stopped working. My non pressurised filter kept working shot
after shot.

My only guess is that the plastic expanded with the heat or
something. When the filter cooled down a bit, it stated working
again.
