In 1938 Cremonesi invented and installed a piston-driven machine in Achille Gaggia's caffe. In 1946 Gaggia started manufacturing piston-driven machines and was awarded a patent in 1947. What's significant about 1949?

True, and I personally wouldn't place pump machines and spring lever machines in the same distinction. Lever machines usually have a preinfusion method built in as well as having a declining pressure curve through the pull, both of which can be seen as desireable, depending on who you listen to.
