Now days, all corn seeds have to be bought, essentially from
Monsanto. Why? The corn bug ( a caterpillar) was ruining the
corn
crop so instead of a bi logical control, Monsanto created a
plant
(by inserting a gene that actually kills that caterpillar) and
you
need to buy those seeds to have a crop. We independent farmers
don't want to go there.
Corn is not a fair comparison to coffee.
The corn plant planted for the past 9000 years is a domesticated
form
of the plant teosinte and cannot reproduce itself naturally.
That being said, I am not wild about the idea of genetically
modified
foods.
How are coffee trees propigated? I know seed trees like apples and
oranges are mainly propigated by grafting to preserve the desired
traits.
The other question is whether cross-pollination has a noticeable
effect on the coffee bean like it does with many of the "SH2" hybrids
of corn?
