The OP gave no indication that he is chugging half a dozen or more cups
a day, not did he say anything about his current health status.
The studies showing that heavy consumption had an effect were very short
term studies. One study that extended to six months showed the effect on
triglycerides was transient - they were already clearly reverting back
towards the pre-trial levels by the six month mark.
Looking at very recent data/reviews:
- There are also reviews (looking at actual heart disease, not purely
blood measures) finding moderate doses of coffee to be associated with
lower risks to health[1].
- Coffee consumption amongst elderly people in Finland is inversely
associated with mortality (after controlling for a large number of
potential confounders), with a dose-response relationship. A similar
trend was found in Swedish women.[2]
- The GISSI study found no association between moderate coffee intake
and cardiovascular events even in very high risk people (post myocardial
infarction)[3].
- Coffee contains a variety of antioxidants that may offset any adverse
effect from the diterpenes. [4]
Either way, if the OP isn't swilling down rather large amounts of the
stuff, in my book he should go ahead and enjoy it without micromanaging.
