I think that you're wrong on this one. Most people who buy coffee at
Starbucks don't know or care how their coffee gets made only that it
is "tasty" and quick. They want the staff to be clean, friendly and
attentive, they don't care about their coffee making skills. While
most of the coffee that is served is to go if it wasn't for the cafe
quality of the place, the people sitting around talking, doing
business, homework, studying or whatever they would do a lot less
business. I don't think that Mickey D will be real competition for
them.
I could be wrong, it has been known to happen but I doubt it in this
case.

care how their coffee is made but they wouldn't buy takeout if there weren't
other people sitting around the store doing their homework?
Schultz himself admitted that SB lost a certain "something" when they went
over to pushbutton machines. I agree with you that the "something" that was
lost was not in the taste or quality of the coffee per se (the superauto
made drinks might even be higher on average), so what was it? If part of
what people are seeking is the cafe-like atmosphere, weren't the traditional
machines part of the overall ambiance that they were there for in the first
place?
