Again, I normally don't reply to Dave's post (no point in rattling the
guys chain) but this time I will because he's raised excellent points,
but drawn the wrong conclusions about them.

Just an observation.
The weekly stats indicate nothing, and are mere filler. view the
monthly and annual trends. People ARE walking with their feet
(mice).
True, True, False
The fewer the number of substantive posts the less there will be to
attract lurkers
The stats would be more useful if they could indicate actual hits, but
it's not possible
I get lots of feedback from folks who are lurking & lurkers don't show
up on the stats
* Newbies have little tolerance for hundreds of spams -- true spam,
like the Mi5 b.s. for example
* Hate flaming
* Don't and won't use "newsreaders" -- which often call for the use of
PAID news servers
* Scoff at maintaining a "killfile"
* Hate the lack of graphics -- the archaic usenet presentation sucks
vs. modern software
* Can't be bothered hand-filtering the nuggets from the drek.
True, True, True, False, False, True, False
Spam & flaming indeed sucks
Most paid internet accounts include web, email, & news server access
Show a person how to use a kill file & they'll use it
Lack of graphics suck, but in an unmoderated group it'd be filled with
porn
Folks figure out who & what to look for very quickly
a major web based coffee interest site has more (VALID) posts in ONE
DAY than ac gets in about TWO weeks, and has 16 times the number of
'members'
True & false at the same time
Web sites do have more content and more regular users
So much of the content on web sites is repetitive to the point of
boredom
Search engines on some web sites are totally worthless
Some web sites are supported by advertisers, leading one to wonder
about their tolerance level for knocks against the folks that pay the
bills

Usenet is an invaluable tool. Usenet interest groups started popping
up as soon as word of Usenet spread. We used it at first as a white-
board for skulling ideas from folks spread all over the map and then
as an extended communications medium.
Moderation came along and extended it's usefulness to interest groups.
Unfortunately for unmoderated groups like A.C., as the popularity of
the internet spread they fell prey to the spammers, just like email.
Too bad, but I always figured that folks sophisticated enough to use
the internet should use the tools at their disposal to make it more
useful. If they don't & won't use kill files then they'll have to wade
through more & more trash to get to the useful news & email posts.
