Who likely were not as meticulous as you would have been to make sure
everything was right.
But they are licensed and they likely have liability insurance if something
goes wrong...AND they can do it legally. I tend to do just about everything
myself unless I lack the confidence that I can figure out how to do it
right.
I hate paying people to do things I can do.
I don't share your assumption that experienced, licensed tradesmen
will be slapdash and less careful than I am.
I used the same electricians I have used for years and who are trusted
by many property owners in my area. We talked a lot about the project
and what was needed. Our power panel was maxed out and fitted between
two beams that would not accept a wider panel. Finding a way to add a
220 line took experience and skill. 60 feet of conduit had to be run
through the ceilings and walls, making sure not to damage various
systems that were in the way. Smoothly patching the resulting damage
took time and skill, too.
The last time I tried to figure out how to re-assign the 5 wires in
one of my kitchen outlets to install a GFCI, smoke ensued. So, I am
more than happy to pay for someone else's expertise.
But, my point really was that 220 installations aren't necessarily a
breeze.
