I've picked up a secondhand Faema Family, judging by the handbook it's an
early one.
Makes a nice cup, the 3-way valve is a pleasant change from my Gaggia
Evolutions (I have 2).
Brew temp seems a little lower than the Gaggias, though I've no way to
measure it save taste in the cup.
Steaming is, however, a problem. I'd expected much better steam performance
than the Gaggia, since it has a much bigger boiler. What actually happens is
that after bleeding water from the wand (which does exit at fairly high
pressure), pressure drops to an uninspiring flow of steam, not enough to
properly make microfoam. By comparison, the Gaggia produced ample steam.
Anybody come across similar problems?
I've also had safety trip-out weirdness, with trip-out activating even
though boiler was full; related?
TIA
I use a Family at work. Indeed, steam is a tad weak-kneed relative
to my home machine (with a 2.5 litre boiler), but I've practiced
and have no trouble getting microfoam. What I CAN'T get is LOTS of
foam...
Never had the safety trip.
