Re: Problems with Wega Mininova, semi-automatic espresso machine, 5 years old

Thanks Terry. I spoke to the EPNW technician again yesterday, and he
has been very helpful. I know that diagnosing a problem over the phone
is tough.

Yo K I'll bite. The machine needs a control unit. Sound like you got
some oddball advice from those EPNW kids ;-)

In the past few days this problem has developed:

When the machine gets to operating temperature, neither the brewing
water nor the hot water functions will work. For a couple of days this
problem was intermittent, and cycling the ON-OFF switch, and/or the
brewing water switch appeared to fix the problem. Now cycling the
switches does not fix the problem.

Further information:

Turning off the main switch and letting the machine cool down restores
both the hot water and brewing water functions. In fact, as the
machine warms up from the cold state, the hot water and brewing
functions work until the machine reaches it's equilibrium
temperature.

I spoke with the technician at Espresso Parts NW, and he suggested
stuck solenoids. He said that the solenoids tend to warp over time and
get stuck, and that I should bang the solenoids with portafilter to
free them up. I gave them the calibrated whack a few times, but this
does not seem to be the problem. The switches are also suspects I
believe. I am wondering if there is a thermal cutoff switch that is
malfunctioning?

If anybody out there can help with ideas for diagnostics, an electrical
schematic diagram, or any other information, I would appreciate
feedback. Also, I would like suggestions for espresso machine repair
in the San Francisco-East Bay area.

Many thanks.
