I would not be too quick to condemn Vaseline as a lubricant for the coffee
machine just because of the stigma of it being found in the 'Master
Bedroom'. It has a lot of other uses including medical ones to cover and
aid in the healing of wounds. These excerpts are taken from Wikipedia -
"Petrolatum is a semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbons, having a melting-point
usually ranging from a little below to a few degrees above 100° F (37° C).
It is colorless, or of a pale yellow color, translucent, and devoid of taste
and smell. It does not oxidize on exposure to the air, and is not readily
acted on by chemical reagents. It is insoluble in water."
"It is also used for treating chapped hands or lips, toenail fungus, and
nosebleeds. Petroleum jelly may also be used as a lubricant when shaving
with a razor."
"Petroleum jelly can also be used as valve grease for some brass instruments
and to lubricate the cork joints of larger woodwind instruments .
Watchmakers use petroleum jelly as grease on friction surfaces of clocks and
watches."
Enough said......

I'm not talking about the o-rings but about the machine itself. Most of
it is polystyrene or polyethylene. If you start spraying and smearing
silicone on the components, they will have what is called environmental
stress cracking, which is a type of cracking that starts at any point
where stresses exist, like at sharp corners or at holes. Yes, Viton is
made by DuPont and it is a fluoroelastomer, but it is not a panacea for
all chemicals. The gaskets actually look like silicone ones to me, but
being in their present form, they would not cause an ESCR problem.
For the record, I don't go around spraying silicone all over my espresso
machines, but it (food grade silicone spray and silicone grease) have come
in handy a couple of times. I've never had a problem with it, and I've
used it (very occasionally) long enough that if there was going to be a
problem it would have occurred by now.
Once again, my comment was made for the archives, so that someone reading
this thread a year from now doesn't run into the master bathroom and grab
a jar of Vaseline to use as an espresso machine lubricant every time they
encounter a part that is hard to get positioned inside a machine.
