Dave retrofits PIDs into Silvias, a $500 home machine.
PID or equiivalent controls can seen on many commercial machines, and
are standard equipment on Synesso and newer LM machines which start
at around $4500. It's become standard enough that Gicar, the major
manufacturer of espresso machine electronics, makes a PID controller
specifically for this market (don't use it though, it apparently
sucks big time).
I just wish someone made a PID with external controls, so you could
put the controls anywhere on the machine, and have the PID itself out
of the way.
That's one of the reasons we chose an OEM PID, measuring 120x80mm on the
front face, and 50mm on the deep side. The PXR3 is far larger than this.
