Re: Gaggia Paros showing it age - time for a new boiler?

Power output varies as the square of the voltage.
That means a heater that puts out 1000W at 240v only
puts out 238W at 117v.

For the opposite case, a heater designed to put out
1000W at 117V will put out 4208W @ 240V. Something
will almost certainly melt, trip, pop, or otherwise
interupt the current flow. (Ever put a 115v light
bulb into a 240v socket?)

The voltage most certainly does make a big difference
to the heating element.

Another example: An incandescent light bulb is, more or less, a
heating element in a rarified atmosphere. Buy a 6 volt tailight and
put it into your 12 volt car. That's what will happen to a 115 heating
element at 220 volts.

The phone company inserted a new ground rod at the pole serving my
home. They nicked the underground power cable which rapidly oxidized.
One side of the feed was at about 95 volts. The other side was at
about 140 volts IIRC. The lights in one half of the house were REALLY
bright!
