There's always the strainer and the teacup if you really want to get back
to roots.

It's one of the ironies of life that "starters" are often better off with
"pro" equipment that is more foregiving of error in technique, while the
more experienced hobbiests who are the ones who tend to own the expensive
"pro" stuff have enough knowledge to get good results out of even "starter"
equipment. So it's not that the Gaggia is better (though I'm more and more
convinced that there's a lot to be said for a single boiler over a HX which
can only be controlled indirectly and therefore imprecisely) but that if
you went back to it you would be surprised at how little loss of shot
quality (if any ) you might experience given what you know now. Giotto is
shinier though.
