Hi, Joe.
The filter doesn't feel smooth as glass; however, the texture is only ever
so slightly grainy. The holes are so fine that they cannot be felt as
holes. I touch a lot of stuff (as you can understand), and it would be
hard for me to imagine more than one shade of discrimination between the
texture of this filter and the texture of a very smooth surface. I'm now
quite certain these holes are computer-generated.
Besides the Braun, I own a gold filter as part of my Cuisinart Brew Central
DCC-1200 drip machine, and the texture of the two filters is about the
same.
I have to revise my earlier opinion that water pours through the filter in
a matter of seconds when the filter has a decent amount of coffee in it. I
haven't done any timed tests, but I now reckon that if I were to put about
eight tablespoons of coffee into the filter to make four cups, and if I
were to pour slowly and steadily, being careful not to over-run the filter,
I might be able to get four cups of brewed coffee in about a minute. (My
present practice is to pour and wait, pour and wait, etc.) I believe
others have mentioned a longer pour time. Perhaps this pour time is based
on brewing larger amounts of coffee than the usual four cups I like to
brew.
