Digging out an old carbonized gasket is frustrationg, especially your
first time. THe first gaskets I ever replaced (20 years ago) were on
an old Gaggia that hadn't seen a new gasket in ten years. I don't know
how it sealed all that time, but it kind of managed.
It took me 4 hours.
This model appears NOT to use the E61 head, which explains how the
screen could be removed without the gasket.
It is best to lie the machine on its side so that can see what you are
digging at. If it is completely carbonized, tools like picks and
screws will not help very much. You may have to get a sharp narrow
chisel or sharpened flat screwdriver and a mallet (hammer?) to dig out
a section of gasket. Once you get to base metal you can start to pry
under the remaining gasket and remove it in pieces. Make sure the
groove is clean before you insert the new gasket, though.
My preferred too on tough (not completely petrofied) gaskets is a 3/4"
wood-boring spade bit. The point is both strong enough and sharp
enough to drive into anything. Inserting the point into the gasket
adjacent to the slot for the portafilter ear allows you to move the
flat part of the bit into the groove and use it as leverage to remove
the toughest gasket. I have NEVER found anything that works as well
for tough gaskets.
The only problem is that it doesn't look the part. I could probably
put a handle on one and market it, but at a couple of bucks at a
hardware store what's the point.
The cheap ones work as well as the expensive ones.
Ditto on leaving the group where it is. The machine makes for a good
holder, afterall.
It isn't going to be easy--probably a two tothree beer job at most.
