Re: Katrina Damage Report

A little bit too misanthropic, I'd say. The world is filled with people
competing for Darwin Awards but as a society we do our best to stop these
people from receiving them, whether they deserve them or not. We treat
people who have lung cancer that they gave themselves from smoking, drunk
drivers trapped in the wreckage of their cars, etc.

The media bears a large share of the blame here. They have cried wolf so
many times when hurricanes were approaching the Gulf that many people
assumed that this was just another false alarm and not really the Big One.
And in a way, it wasn't - NO was doing fairly well until AFTER the storm was
over and the levee broke.

It seems to me the authorities also bear a large share of the blame - as
others have pointed out, those who are stranded generally seem to be poor
and may have lacked the resources to evacuate. News reports are now that
those currently in the Superdome will be sent via a fleet of 475 buses to
the Houston Astrodome. Shouldn't those buses have been lined up in low
lying neighborhoods BEFORE the storm, with police going from door to door to
get people on them?

And shouldn't the Corp of Engineers have made some advance plans on what to
do if the levee broke? They seem to have no idea how to fix this except to
wait for the lake to reach a level with the city. I don't know what the
solution is but someone should have been thinking about such a solution in
advance instead of improvising while the water pours in.
