Re: Provocative discussion of the nature of Coffeegeek

Oops. You're right. I meant to say I like both, as evidenced by my frequent "recent newbie" posts here.

Both have their positive points and negative. There's plenty that can be made fun of on both [especially the ironies that the content-rich site has content that rarely changes, and the unmoderated group is more insiderish than the moderated [well, maybe that's not ironic], but I'm sure glad to have both. And like I said, I'm glad the buying and selling is over there.

I'm off to bed now that's settled ;)

Actually, I just realised why I like alt.coffee. It's the posters that make the content. It's not moderated, which is good and bad - people can say what they like which also means that we have some right silly people saying what they like, but life goes on. No-one else apart from those that contribute decide the direction alt.coffee goes in. People tend to take a break when the direction of either their life or alt.coffee changes, but they usually return to the fray.

I'm not dismissing CG alone - I've looked at (and subscribed to) many forums and cannot stay interested for more than a few visits. You may think that alt.coffee is parochial, but I really find forums to be even more so. Both mediums have their "in crowd" and can be intimidating to a newcomer, although I accept what others say about the friendliness of CG. I took part in a few different Jeep forums when I bought the Jeep Cherokee and couldn't believe the range of posts from helpful to almost rude..
