Re: Got a Hario

My sister, who lives in Japan, just sent me a Hario Tecnica 5 cupper. It looks so cool!

But I've got some questions:

Is denatured alcohol the best thing to use in the burner? Or would some other fuel, like kerosene or "lamp oil" work better?

Use denatured alcohol. It burns clean and does not turn the carafe black

Should I stick with the supplied cloth filters, or could/should I use a glass filter? I've got the old standby Cory rod, a Silex Lox-In, and my newest baby, a Cona glass rod, that I bought off eBay from some guy in London. (BTW, in my narrow-neck Silex, whch I use on a daily basis, I've switched over to the Cona rod. It seems to let the pot drain faster, with equivalent clarity.)

Or you can use paper filters, the nice lady at Hario told me that the cloth filter will get moldy and smelly after a while, so she recommended paper

Finally, should I heat up the water with the burner, or would that take forever? Should i instead start with hot water in the lower bowl, and just use the burner to get it boiling?
yes it is a good idea to use something like a tea kettle to warm your water to boiling before putting it to the burner.

I bought my hario online after a trip to Japan, I could have bought one there, but I was afraid it wouldnt survive the trip home. I dont use it all that often, but I know when I do, I can always count on a good, strong, tasty cup of coffee.

Here is my tip: make sure you read the instructions carefully and install the filter properly, or else you will be drinking coffee grounds along with your coffee.

Enjoy!
Steve
