Scientific American did a story called potential major disasters and
NOLA getting hit by a hurricane was one. There are not enough ways out
of the place even if these people had transportation. NOLA's hurricane
plan includes "vertical avoidance" - put in terms one can understand -
it means head for the nearest building over 40' tall and climb.
Combine their below sea level elevation with a 20 to 30' storm surge
and the reported Parrish Coroner's stash of 10,000 body bags would be
woefully inadequate. I believe SA's estimate was over 100K fatals all
the worst factors come into play.
