My wife doesn't hate coffee equipment. She hates spending
significant amounts of money--especially at once. She's agreed to
the machine for now. I'll work on the grinder next year.

Wouldn't work in this case. That would just spend *more money.
Besides, I'm not buying anything for myself, I'm buying it for
us. She likes espresso just as much as I do.
