Putting together all the advice you have received and your current
position, my advice is to get a good grinder first and a French Press.
Use those until you can afford the espresso maker you want. Otherwise
you wife will have years of "I-told-you-so's" to laud over you while
you struggle to get the espresso machine to work properly.

Seriously, the grinder is quite a bit more important than the espresso
machine. Without it you are just going to be frustrated, I'm afraid.
