The lower level of our house is partially underground and the cell
coverage is not very good. I think the extender would work for us.

But i wonder if it is about to be replaced by a newer unit...

They work. The version you are looking at doesn't do EvDO so if data is involved it will be 1X. The new version which replaces this version has EvDO.
