heck you can get a usb wireless dongle for your laptop (for $9.97 at
walmart), that turns your laptop into an ap (access point) with a
range of about 200-300 ft, and use (enable that, disable the built in)

What is this device CALLED? Trying to search for it finds the
opposite device, a client-end device that provides wireless to laptops
and desktops, to connect to standard wifi routers.

don't know where you got the idea that a mifi was what you need,

A coworker is using mifi/eyefi to do the same tasks, for the same
purposes.

it's called a wireless usb dongle....
heres a link for an n version ($25 instead of $10 at walmart, you only
need a b/g wireless dongle, but this showed on their website)
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Ambicom-WL150N-NUSB-Wireless-N-Nano-USB-Dongle/14090109

Based on what info is provided at the link above, it doesn't do what you
think it does. It's a client device, just like the wifi already built
into the laptop. (It can be used on laptops that don't have built-in
wifi, or if the wifi breaks and you don't want to go with the expense of
repairing the built-in wifi you can just add one of these. Or you can
use it on a desktop computer to connect to the wifi router without
needing to run ethernet.) It's not a router - it doesn't provide any
router functionality to allow the EyeFi to talk to the laptop.

Jesus, you claim to be some smart early adopter and all you do is whine
and not think outside your tiny little box. Many wifi "client adapters"
are able to be turned into access points with the right piece of software.
It isn't hard.

You could also just pickup a fricking $50 wifi router from best buy and get
a $20 converter from radioshack to plugin instead of the wall wart to the
router and you are set. But apparently that's too hard.
