No cellular (data) reception - no maps and no guidance - period.
Funny, my Samsung BlackJack II had a built in GPS which worked even
where there was no AT&T Signal. I'm sure there's other smartphones
with a true GPS Receiver built in.

It's not the GPS function - it's the maps themselves. Having a GPS fix is one thing.
Having it display on a map of where you are at is another. The map would have to be loaded
unto the phone. If there is an app that does this - I'd like to know. .
