lousy reception

It seems I have "marginal" coverage in my neighborhood and even worse
reception in my house which is an older brick siding house. We
frequently do not receive calls and discover someone called only if
they leave a voicemail. We do receive text messages everytime though.
My son's Verizon Blitz has the worst reception, followed by my Samsung
Sway and finally my wife's Samsung Alias2. My son doesn't care since
all he does is text and my wife can't live without her QWERTY keyboard.
I was so disgusted with my Sway that I returned to my old Motorola RAZR
which seems to receive calls even when there are no bars visible
however I sometimes have to move to a window or outside to have a
conversation.
Why do the newer phones have worse performance than the RAZR? You
would think they had better electronics design. Is it that Motorolas
are just inherently better in the most important thing a cell phone
should do? My RAZR even sounds better than all the other ones.
VZW has given me the okay to break the contract without penalty. They
have promised for a year they will be adding a new tower in my area but
haven't yet. Honestly we don't want to switch since nearly all other
people we talk to use VZW also. I did use a T-Mobile phone for a few
days as a test but it required connecting it to my wireless router to
get reception in the house. That severely limits phone choices and is
not a viable option in case of loss of power or broadband connection.
